Describing GVSU
Grand Valley is a public school. Public meaning anyone from anywhere is allowed to apply. There are nine campuses spread out around Michigan. There is one in Allendale, one in Holland, three in Grand Rapids, three in Muskegon, and one in Traverse City. The on-campus dorms are somewhat co-ed. Boys are on 1 floor while the girls are on another, all in one building. The campus located in Allendale, Michigan is built on approximately 1304 acres. This is the main and first campus built. Academic facilities on the Allendale campus include: 122 classrooms, 144 research laboratories, 20 lab prep rooms, 21 computer labs, and the Zumberge Library. Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids campus is built on 33 acres of land. These facilities include 57 classrooms, 78 research laboratories, 23 lab prep rooms, 11 computer labs, and the Steelcase library. The Meijer campus in Holland is 30,693 square feet. This campus contains 12 classrooms, 2 conference rooms, 3 labs and 11 offices. The James L. Stevenson Center for Higher Education at Muskegon Community College was established in the fall of 1995 as a joint venture between GVSU, Ferris State University, and Western Michigan University. The center offers several GVSU graduate and undergraduate programs. The Lake Michigan Center, which houses the Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI). The Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center (MAREC), which is the first fully integrated demonstration facility for distributed generation of electricity using alternative and renewable energy technologies in the United States. The Traverse City Regional Center was established in the fall of 1995 and is located at the NMC University Center in a partnership with Northwestern Michigan College. The center offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in education, social work, and liberal studies. In 2012, GVSU announced that it would be purchasing the Barden Building adjacent to Comerica Park in downtown Detroit, Michigan to house its charter school offices. The center will also house the Southeast Michigan Region of the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center, of which GVSU is the supervisor.
